Stuart MacGill makes himself available for IPL

The former Australian leg-spinner, Stuart MacGill, has expressed his desire to play the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying that he is physically fit for Twenty20 cricket.

MacGill, 40, is currently representing the Sydney Sixers in the ongoing Big Bash League in Australia. So far in the tournament, he has played a couple of games, and was impressive with the ball.

The aggressive leg-spinner claimed that he is hundred percent fit and wants to continue his T20 career. He also said that he returned to competitive cricket in order to gauge his fitness levels, and hoped that the IPL outfits would be interested in picking him up during the auction.

“I really don’t want to get too far ahead of myself here, but I am playing in the BBL because my kids thought I was getting old. I am proving to them that I can still cut it with the young blokes,” MacGill told reporters.

The auctions for the fifth season of the lucrative league are scheduled to be held in February next year, with the championship starting from April 4, 2012. MacGill explained that his decent performances in the BBL prompted him to make himself available for the Indian T20 League.

“I just wanted to see if I could keep together physically and once I ticked that box I thought ‘hey, maybe it is worth my while’. Having played a couple of Twenty20 games now, I know I can do it. I don’t get too sore. I know I can run around enough. It is worth a go (IPL)”, added the Western Australian spinner, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2008.

During his international career spanning 10 years, the leg-spinner played 44 Test matches for Australia, grabbing 208 wickets at a fine average of 29.02. He also played three One Day Internationals (ODIs) for his country, but could not cement his place in the limited-over format.

His compatriot, Shane Warne, has captained the Rajasthan Royals for the last four IPL seasons, but has now retired from the league. The objective of Macgill would to be to emulate Warne in the cash-rich championship.

Sehwag crosses 8000 runs during his record breaking innings

India flamboyant Virender Sehwag created history by becoming the highest scorer ever and also reaced 8000 runs in a one-day internationals as India registered their highest one-day total of 418 against West Indies in the fourth ODI at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.

Sehwag hit 25 boundaries and seven sixes during his record innings of 219, which came from just 149 balls.

With this innings, Sehwag recorded the highest individual score by any batsman in ODI cricket, surpassing the previous record of Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar’s 200 not out against South Africa at Gwalior in February 2010.

On 170, he offered a catch to the deep but West Indies captain Darren Sammy dropped an easy catch. That was just the lifeline Sehwag need to reassess the situation; a slew of boundaries and coolly-collected singles took him past 190, and a flick off a rank full toss from Kieron Pollard eased him to 195, in the process raising 8,000 career runs.

The world champions eventually posted a mammoth total of 418 after an opening partnership of 176 which only ended because Sehwag ran out partner Gautam Gambhir for 67.

Sehwag’s record 219 hands India series

Virender Sehwag’s record breaking knock of 219 with the help of 25 fours and seven sixes, set up a 153-run win over West Indies to secure a series victory in the fourth one-day international in Indore on Thursday.

Chasing the mammoth total of 418, West Indies began brightly, Lendl Simmons (36) and Kieran Powell (7) hitting early boundaries but things began to go awry when a mix-up ended with Powell’s run out.

Simmons cracked six fours and a six and added 50 in quick time with Marlon Samuels, who made 33 in 26 balls before Simmons was caught behind off Jadeja – an excellent piece of work by Patel and Samuels became Rahul Sharma’s first ODI wicket when the ball rolled onto the stumps.

The leg-spinner struck with the final ball of his first over as everything went India’s way. Danza Hyatt (11) and Pollard (3) were then bowled by Sharma, who finished with three for 43 after Hyatt got in a terrible mess and was bowled through his legs and Pollard misjudged the length and missed a shorter delivery.

Ramdin then combined with Russell to save some face, Russell blasting three sixes to make 29 in 24 balls before he was stumped when he overbalanced trying to work Raina away into the on side.

An earlier finish looked likely after Sammy (2), Rampaul (10) and Roach (7) were dismissed cheaply but Ramdin and Narine put together an enterprising 64-run stand for the final wicket which was broken when Ramdin was caught off the bowling of Raina.

Earlier, Virender Sehwag hammered the highest ever score in ODI cricket as India amassed their best ever team total – 418 for five.

Racing through the records across a Holkar Cricket Stadium pitch void of any help for the bowlers, the 33-year-old right-hander blasted seven sixes and 25 fours during his 149-ball stay to light up the crowd as India posted their highest ever one-day total against a hapless West Indies attack.

Sehwag cut Andre Russell for a boundary to overtake Sachin Tendulkar’s 200 not out that was scored against South Africa in a Gwalior ODI on Feb 24, 2010 and today Sehwag go 19 better across a knock of truly brutal proportions.

Leading the side in absence of regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sehwag won the toss and returned to justify his decision to bat first on a belter of a track.

Sehwag added 176 runs with Gautam Gambhir (67) in 22-odd overs before a mix-up resulted in the exit of his opening partner.

Next man in Suresh Raina (55) also helped himself to an easy half-century before departing in a similar fashion. Sehwag, however, could not be tamed.

Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma (27) and Virat Kohli (23) contributed with valuable knocks but it was Sehwag who starred with his mammoth innings.

Playing his 240th one-dayer, the Delhi player treated the West Indian pacers and spinners with equal disdain and hit them almost at will. The visitors made it worse with their sloppy fielding.

Sehwag was on 20 when Kieron Pollard’s direct hit missed the stumps with the batsman nowhere near the crease.

The double century would not have materialised either had his opposite number Darren Sammy, running from extra cover, not dropped an easy catch off Ravi Rampaul. Sehwag was batting on 170 at that stage.

Pollard eventually removed a tired Sehwag in the 47th over but the batsman by then had ensured India posted their fourth 400-plus total in one-day cricket. Sehwag rightly departed to a standing ovation similar to the appreciative crescendo that greeted Tendulkar in Gwalior some 18 months ago.
